What to Bring When You Buy a Used Car: A Simple Checklist

2017 Ford Fiesta S for sale at Lamar Auto Sales, North Charleston SC

A little preparation can turn a long dealership visit into a quick, easy one. Whether you are paying cash, financing or trading in a vehicle, having the right documents with you saves time and avoids a second trip. Here is a simple checklist for anyone buying a used car in North Charleston, Summerville, Goose Creek or anywhere in the Lowcountry.

The basics everyone needs

  • A valid driver’s license. You will need it for the test drive and for the paperwork.
  • Proof of auto insurance. You generally need coverage in place before you drive a car home. Call your insurance company ahead of time so you know how to add the new vehicle.
  • A way to pay. Ask the dealer which forms of payment they accept so there are no surprises on the day.

If you plan to finance

Lenders typically ask for documents that show who you are, where you live and how you will repay the loan. Requirements vary, so ask the dealer or lender what they need. Common items include:

  • Recent pay stubs or other proof of income
  • A recent utility bill or other proof of your address
  • A list of personal references, if your lender asks for them
  • Information about your current loan, if you are trading in a car you have not paid off

Third-party financing is available at Lamar Auto Sales if you would like to explore it.

If you are trading in a vehicle

  • The vehicle title, or the lender’s information if you still owe money on it
  • Your registration
  • All sets of keys and any remote fobs
  • Service records, if you have them

Cleaning out the car and bringing the paperwork makes the appraisal faster and can help you get a fair value.

Things that make the visit easier

  • A short list of must-haves. Budget, body style and features you care about.
  • The vehicles you want to see. Browse our cars for sale first and note the ones you like.
  • A friend or family member. A second opinion helps, especially on the test drive.
  • Time. Give yourself a few hours so you never feel rushed.

What you do not need to bring

You do not need to bring a vehicle history report, because dealers can usually provide one. You also do not need to decide on the day. It is fine to take notes, sleep on it and come back.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a car with only a learner’s permit?

Generally you need a valid driver’s license to complete a purchase and register the vehicle. If you are unsure about your situation, call the dealer or the South Carolina DMV before you visit.

Do I need insurance before I buy?

Most buyers arrange insurance before driving the car home. Your insurance company can usually add a new vehicle quickly, often the same day.

Can someone else come with me to sign?

If you are buying together, both buyers may need to be present. Ask the dealer what they require in your case.
